Easy Binder Cover
Requirements for A4 Binder
Fabric for Outer Cover 25” x 16” Cut 1
Wadding 25” x 16” Cut 1
Lining 13” x 16” Cut 2
Inside Cover ‘Flaps’ 10” x 16” Cut 2
If your binder is not a standard A4 size (and this method can be used from very small notebooks to large Lever Arch files) cut your fabrics about 4” bigger in both height and width to give an excess of 2” all round. Scale flap size depending on size of folder.
Method
All seams ½”
Join lining pieces on long side, leaving a gap of about 6” in the centre. Press seam open.
Fold and press the two flaps in half lengthwise.
Put outer cover fabric on the wadding secure with pins, spray basting or use fusible wadding. Quilt as desired.
Using Wonder Clips put the quilted cover snugly on your binder. Fold the excess over to the inside and make sure any geometric design is straight. Using a pen mark a ½” seam allowance on all four edges, use the edge of the Wonder Clip which has a ½” ‘bite’.
Remove cover and cut along your ½” marks. This piece should really have nice square corners of 90o --this is more important than slavishly following your seam allowance marks which might not all be in line.
Fold this piece in half and mark centre point at top and bottom with a pin. Unfold. And place on your cutting board right side up. Put a flap at each end lining up raw edges on long sides.
Put lining piece wrong side up on top aligning the centre seams with the pins that you have used to mark the centre of the outer cover.
You now have a sandwich of outer cover and lining right sides together with flaps in between.
Pin all together keeping pins away from the edges. Turn the whole thing over and cut away the excess from flaps and lining. Put Wonder Clips all around the edges to prevent shifting of the layers, remove pins.
Using ½” seam allowance and starting about 3” away from a corner sew all round. Refer to MQ website for YouTube video on how to get good corners. If you are using this method the threads you use to pull through the corners should be laid between the outer cover and the flap.
Turn through gap in lining. Make lovely corners, sew up the gap in the lining and enjoy!
The alternate method is to sew only the two long sides and one short side. Turn right sides out. Put the unsewn flap to outside fabric and then sew this seam. Zig-zig stitch to neaten and fold flap to inside.
