A Gallery of our Christmas Projects New or Old
Please send in lots of photos and make this a cheerful festive exhibition
And a poem I found on Facebook:
'Twas the night before Christmas (for Quilters)
'Twas the night before Christmas,
And the quilts were not made.
The threads were all tangled, the cookies delayed.
The stocking weren't hung, the pantry was bare.
The poor weary Quilter, was tearing her hair.
Stacks of fat quarters, tipped over in streams.
Visions of Log Cabins, had turned into dreams.
When what to her wondering eyes should appear,
But a bus full of quilters with all of their gear.
They went straight to work with just a few mutters,
Sorting and stitching and brandishing cutters.
The patterns emerged from all of the clutter,
Like magic the fabrics arranged in a flutter.
Log Cabins, Lone Stars, Flying Geese & Bear Tracks
Each quilt was a beauty-even the backs.
Her house how it twinkled, her quilts how they glowed.
The cookies were baking, the stockings were sewed.
Their work was all done, so they folded their frames,
And packed up their needles, without giving their names.
They boarded the bus, and checked the next address.
More quilts to be made, another quilter in distress.
She heard one voice echo, as they drove out of sight,
Happy quilting to all and to all a good night!

Hi I thought you might be interested to see what I made for Christmas a couple of years ago . I found the pattern in a charity shop and decided to make it, there were two sizes available I chose the smallest at 24 inches high as I had no idea where I would store the 4 foot tall version for the rest of the year.

I was looking for something at the bottom of my rarely visited ironing bin and found my Xmas table runner and napkins, which had been languishing there since January! So now they are pressed and ready to go onto the kitchen table on the 1st December, hoorah. Also a picture of some robins I made a few ago.

Three lovely Christmas stitcheries from Julia.
The North Hampshire Quilters (UK ) & Kapiti Quilters (NZ) Wallhanging Exchange 1998..... Finish in 1999
Starter Block CHRISTMAS STAR (A Happy Memory)
I did the central block with the poinsettia as we used to have lots of poinsettias on the steps leading down to the garden in our house in Madras. I was able to make the block for John to see before he died...so this is a special one for me.
It was then sent over to NZ for 2 quilters to do a block. Blocks could be moved around but must all be included in the final piece. A record was always taken when they came back but was not seen by the stitchers. Some blocks had quite a move around! The piece came back to our group and 2 members did their blocks. A friend of mine split the central top block and inserted the wreath one above my poinsettia. It was then sent back to NZ for the last two blocks to be done. The piece came back for the owner to finish off and to quilt. I was very pleased with the way mine turned out...some members were not so happy! It goes up every Xmas. The pocket at the back holds the paper where everyone recorded what they had done and why...so very interesting, as well as their club badge.

N.H.Q. Challenge 2002 For the Queen's Golden Jubilee.
"Golden Jubilee Angels" All members exchanged 6" squares of red & blue. Everyone was given a 6" square of white/gold, with a free choice of what to do. I adapted a design which was in the Nov 2002, P & Q. The only time I came 1st...so gave myself the special little button!! It goes up every year too. |
The daughter of one of our members in the Barn Owl Group used to stitch each of the 10 members a piece each in a Christmas card. They were all the same pattern. I kept mine carefully and managed to take them off the cards, washed and ironed them and then managed to place them in a pleasing order. I managed to make this hanging and was able to show it to my friend Sylvia for her to see when I went down for one of the meetings. She was thrilled to see what I had done...sadly she died shortly afterwards...so I was so pleased I had done it in time for her and her daughter to see. Note the Barn Owl at the bottom left hand side! Hanging made in 2015. Again special memories.

Here are four photos of Xmas tree wall-hangings which I have made, each using a different technique.

The first was pretty straightforward and the pattern was included quite a few years ago in a quilting magazine. After sewing strips of fabric together ( first green and then creams) the design came together easily by cutting triangles and then stitching them alternately together row by row.

The second is a Sarah Welfair design from her Simply Christmas booklet - very different and was a good exercise in raw-edge applique and machine edging using metallic thread. |
The final two are both by Cindi Edgerton. I gave the first to my son and daughter-in-law and they have forwarded their Christmas photo showing it hanging in their hall . It is called A Little Bit Shorter Tall Tree.
Finally the last I have kept and we hang it from a door. This is called Tall Trim the Tree. They are both constructed using foundation piecing and came together quickly once I had decided on the four fabrics to use. This last tree is great for hanging decorations. You may notice Elvis...!

Here are some Christmas items I have made. They are all made from fabric leftover from other items.

This is a door panel, but I've made it's too wide for a door! The 'Bear' is 4' tall!!
It was a printed panel, I put bondaweb around the edge of the bear and then carefully cut him out. Then I fused and appliqued him to the background fabric. After that - a lot of quilting, He makes me smile! Anne |
.This is an 'Elf on the Shelf' that I made last year for the little grandchildren who now live just one door away!
I love precise instructions so I bought a new but vintage McCalls pattern; He was good fun to make, quite easy, I particularly like his knotted knees. They had great fun with him last December and I'm told he's due back form the North pole any day soon. As you can see the pattern also features a Father Christmas, - another little project for lockdown... |
